I was asked to to some art work for an apartment in Marbella. Because Marbella is beside the sea and is a working port to this day I looked at old sea maps from the 16th/17th and 18th century. There is a wealth of images and designs in these maps, sometimes accurate and often works of the wildest imaginations! I took most of the inspiration from an 18th century map of the coast line beside Marbella with the 14 watchtowers that lined the coast on the watch for invaders or pirates. Also a map of the Gibraltar strait by a Moroccan map maker called Piri Reis.

I worked on raw linen that I bleached and dyed with tea to approximate old parchment and then used as my base, felted alpaca wool. It is the start of a journey methinks!
